Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fill out my skills profile?

Click on the following link to log-in to your account: http://npoconnect.org/. Once logged in, click on “My Skills Profile” under “My Info” on the left-hand side of your screen. Here you will complete fields which will provide other users a snapshot of your nonprofit experience.  You are required to complete the field indicating whether or not you are a consultant.  Scroll down and you should see an area entitled “My Skills” followed by one entitled “Skills Sought.”  This is another required data point.  You will need to enter at least one skill you have and are willing to share or one skill you are seeking.  Once you have completed the skills profile, click Save on the bottom of the page.  You always can return to your skills profile at a later time to make any edits or updates.

While NPO Connect is designed to provide mentoring in any conceivable skill relating to the non-profit sector and provides an “Other” box for those searching for skills not listed in the drop-down menu, we suggest using the categories listed when possible as they will be most successful in granting you a match.

How do I search for a user who has the skills I’m looking to learn?

You can browse other users’ skills profiles to see who has the skills you are looking for. To search for other users, click on the “Browse Skills Users Have” link under “Get Started and Connect” on the left-hand side of the screen once you’ve logged-in to your account. If you are a mentor searching for a mentee, click the “Browse Skills Users Want” link. You will be brought to a page where you can search for users by skill, profession, availability, and profession type.

How do I get a mentor-mentee match?

Once you’ve found someone you want to connect with, go to their skills profile page. On the left-hand side under “Relationship Actions” you can choose “Become User’s Mentor” or “Become User’s Mentee.” Once you do so you will be given the option of elaborating on what you’re hoping to gain from the relationship, then click the “Send” button.

Underneath the user’s username at the top of their skills profile you can also click on the “Send this user a message” button to send the user a message without requesting to connect with them as a mentor or mentee.

Also, unless you requested to not receive email alerts from NPO Connect, you will receive a message every time a new user indicates in their skills profile that they are willing to share a skill you are seeking.

What do I do if I forgot my password?

How should I determine the specifics of my mentor-mentee relationship?

The terms of your peer-mentoring relationship are really up to you and your mentor/mentee. To help you specify the terms of your mentor-mentee expectations, we have this “Sample Agreement” (click the link and scroll to the bottom of the page: http://npoconnect.org/node/19#agreement) that you can read and modify to fit your individual needs.  Both parties should sign this and keep a copy for your reference.

How do I receive email alerts from NPO Connect informing me when another user completes or edits their skills profile indicating they have that same skill that I’m seeking?

Please log-in to your account, click on “My Skills Profile” under “My Info” on the left-hand side of your screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and uncheck the box under “Email Notifications” (directly above the Save and Preview buttons).

You can also click on the “Notifications” tab (four words to the right of your username heading on your skills profile page) to check each box that corresponds to a skill that you are seeking. When another user completes or edits their skills profile indicating they have that same skill you are seeking, the system will automatically generate an email to you with a link to their skills profile.

How do I make it so I don’t receive email alerts from NPO Connect?

If you do not want to receive email alerts from NPO Connect when new users register who match the needs you signified in filling out your skills profile, please log-in to your account, click on “My Skills Profile” under “My Info” on the left-hand side of your screen. Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click the box under “Email Notifications” (directly above the Save and Preview buttons), labeled “Please do not sign me up for automatic email alerts when new users sign up with skills I am interested in learning”.

If you are still receiving undesirable notifications, click on the “Notifications” tab  (four words to the right of your username heading on your skills profile page). If you do not want to receive an email, simply toggle the check box associated with that skill to remove the check mark, and click save.

What do I do if my category of work or skill isn’t listed in the drop-down menu?

There is an “Other” box for those searching for skills not listed in the drop-down menu. If you select “Other,” we suggest that you specify the skill that you are seeking in the text box below “What specifically do you want to learn about this skill,” as well as elaborating as to what you want to learn about the skill. We also suggest using the categories listed when possible as they will be most successful in granting you a match.

Finally, feel free to contact us at info@npoconnect.org with suggestions for other skills you feel should be included in the drop-down menu.  We seriously consider all suggestions from NPO Connectors!
